ENGLISH VERSION:

Satellite Internet Will Reach Outer Islands in French Polynesia By 2020

3 September 2019 – When the new year starts in 2020, just under 276,000 people across most of the inhabited islands in French Polynesia will be able to connect to high-speed internet via satellite.

This is when a brand-new satellite, named Kacific1 and owned by Kacific Broadband Satellites Group (Kacific) will start operating. Kacific1 will transmit high-speed internet via three large satellite beams over the island groups of Îles Australes, Îles de la Société, Îles Tuamotu, Îles Gambier and Îles Marquises. This means that French Polynesians living outside the reach of fibre will have access to fast, affordable internet, regardless of how remote or isolated they are.

“I started Kacific to connect people across the Pacific Islands with satellite technology,” says Christian Patouraux, CEO and founder of Kacific. “Satellite technology is complementary to fibre. Fibre is a great technology, but it is too expensive to connect every isolated island or remote area. Fibre is also too fragile. It can easily be cut by accident or natural disaster, as we saw in Tonga in 2018.”

“Thanks to Kacific 1, even people living on remote islands in French Polynesia will have the option to connect to high-speed broadband internet. And the internet will be ‘always on’, regardless of problems affecting the ground-based, fibre network.”

“We have worked with a number of countries, such as Vanuatu and Niue, to connect small communities to high-speed satellite internet. We have seen our satellite internet providing life changing possibilities to these communities, including computer labs for schools and video calling for nurses and doctors. I love working with Pacific Island people and these great outcomes make my work very rewarding,” says Patouraux.

Kacific currently operates satellite broadband services across the Pacific, with a focus on connecting island communities with affordable internet through small satellite dishes.

In September 2017, following volcanic activity close to Ambae island, Vanuatu, emergency response services used the satellite internet connection provided by Kacific to co-ordinate the evacuation of 10,000 people. The satellite dish installed at Torgil primary school was the only high-speed internet access point on the island.

Kacific also provides the internet connection for the Vanuatu Interisland Telemedicine and Learning (VITAL) Network. The Network has already saved the lives of a number of people in emergency situations, because of the speed with which outer island health clinics can contact the main hospitals and specialist doctors.

Kacific has been recognised globally for its work towards better social outcomes through communications technology. Kacific won the Best Digital Inclusion Award 2019 at ICT Days, Vanuatu, and received a Better World Satellite Award in 2018 from the Satellite and Space Professionals International.
